Leviticus (Program #25) – A Concluding Word on the Offerings and the Priesthood

Hebrews is a marvelous New Testament book that contains many passages that are well-known and often quoted by Christians. Yet the book as a whole remains a mystery to a great many believers. The key to understanding Hebrews may well be found in the Old Testament book of Leviticus. As we will see today that the book of Hebrews is an exposition of Leviticus.

In Hebrews 9:11-14 says “But Christ … not through the blood of goats and calves but through His own blood, entered once for all into the Holy of Holies, obtaining an eternal redemption/ For if the blood of goats and bulls and the ashes of a heifer sprinkling those who are defiled sanctify to the purity of the flesh/ How much more will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered Himself without blemish to God, purify our conscience from dead works to serve the living God?” more…

Leviticus (Program #24) – The Lesson and the Regulations for the Priests

Chapter 10 of the book of Leviticus is a wonderfully intriguing and interesting chapter. It begins with a day full of glory and a day full of blessing and enjoyment because God has accepted the offerings of the priests, the sons of Aaron. But then something severe happens to Aaron – two of his sons bring themselves under God’s judgment and the scene changes to one of God’s righteousness and holiness only to be turned again to God’s mercy. We invite you to stay with us for this life study of Leviticus today, as we look at chapter 10, a chapter that reveals God’s mercy and His holiness.

Chapter 10 follows a wonderful section that we cover yesterday in chapter 9 with the four issues of the priestly service.  But in this chapter there is a sad, even tragic event that is told and it has to do with these two sons of Aaron, Abihu and Nadab.  The account is found in the first 11 verses of chapter 10 and we are going to see how this tragic story really applies to us today in our situation.

Leviticus (Program #23) – The Issue of the Priestly Service

If someone were to ask you “what is the genuine priestly service in the New Testament?”  Would you envision priests in long robes and gowns handling various utensils in a big sanctuary?  Or, would you see ordinary believers handling every day, the real and marvelous Christ in their experience.  We are going to talk today about the issue of the genuine priestly service.

This will be a marvelous fellowship that we are going to have concerning this matter of the priestly service and the result of this priestly service.  We’ve seen again and again in these life study messages from Leviticus that these pictures in the Old Testament from the Levitical priesthood really have an application for all of God’s people and that there is the universal priesthood of all the believers in the New Testament.  So we have to apply these pictures to us each day.

Leviticus (Program #22) – The Consecration of Aaron and His Sons

Consecration is an Old Testament term used only a few times in the Bible.  Yet it bears deep and significant meaning to all born again children of God that love Him and have given themselves over to Him. This is a term that worldly people can never really know or understand but what about us? Do we really appreciate what it is to be consecrated to the Lord Jesus?

This word consecration that some Christians are familiar with or may be have used in a certain context but it only appears in the Old Testament mainly in Leviticus, Exodus and Numbers. In its original context, it dealt with the sons of Aaron who were the priests at that time and they were consecrated or ordained for service in the tabernacle. Leviticus (Program #21) – The Law of the Sin, Trespass, Peace Offerings

It’s not difficult for us to consider as law, the Ten Commandments given through Moses. However, we might find it hard to regard the law as something that concerns our enjoyment of Christ.  We may think that if there’s a law concerning the enjoyment of Christ, there could not be any enjoyment. Our eyes are about to be opened to realize that our enjoyment in experiencing Christ as life is regulated according to the law of life.

It helps to realize that we have five basic problems -we are not absolute for God, we never could be God’s testimony, what we are is just sin, what we do is nothing but commit sins and trespasses, what we never could have is peace with God.  Hallelujah for Christ! Christ is the burnt offering who is absolute for God. When we enjoy Him, God accepts us and we are satisfaction to Him. Leviticus (Program #20) – The Law of the Meal Offering

Psalm 36:9 says, “For with Thee is the fountain of life/ In Thy light we see light.” The Old Testament offerings from Leviticus when properly applied in our New Testament walk with the Lord will bring us to experience Christ as the very fountain of life. This life brings us into the light, God’s light. In His light, we see even more clearly our true condition and how short we are and how in need we are of the very Christ God has provided us to be our offering, to bring us more into God’s presence.

The meal offering is the wonderful offering for us to enjoy Christ which is related to the cycle of life, and that is related to our walking in the light. God is light!  This really is the Christian life – we walk in the light, God shines in us, this leads us to enjoy Christ as the offerings, then we have more life and this life brings us more light and we get more shining, more brought to Christ as our offering…

Leviticus (Program #17) -The Sin Offering Christ for the Sins of God’s People (3)

In this universe there are only two sources, God is one source and His enemy Satan is the other.  Most often we find ourselves somewhere in between these two sources and usually not conscious of being under the influence of either one.  We may think that we are basically neutral doing our best to do good but occasionally slipping into sin.  But in fact there is no neutral, everything we do, everything we think, say or even feel has its origin in one or the other of these two universal sources.  To be free not just from sin but from the very source of sin is the focus of the offerings presented to us in Leviticus.  Especially when we see the spiritual applications of these offerings that are developed in the pages of the New Testament.

Leviticus (Program #16) -The Sin Offering Christ for the Sins of God’s People (2)

Leviticus 4:2 speaks of the sin of ignorance, whereas some version translated unintentional sin.  God’s remedy in the Old Testament was the sin offering. Today, we  commit sins unintentionally or inadvertently.  In fact often times the very thing that we determine not to do we end up doing and doing them repeatedly.  Why does this occur even to the most spiritually advanced?  Of course we know that in Christ we are forgiven but still the utter frustration and discouragement that we feel. How many times have we prayed “Lord how long will I continue to do this?”.  But we hope that our fellowship today will be a much practical help to all of God’s seekers as we look at the sin offering in Leviticus and also its New Testament application.
