Deuteronomy (Program #23) – Warning (Implying Grace) (1) and Christ in Deuteronomy – The Monument, the Altar, and the Offerings

In the land of Israel near the ancient city of Shechem they are two peaks.  One is called Mount Ebal and the other is Mount Gerizim. The two were separated by a narrow valleys and to this day one is called the Mountain of Cursing and the other is the Mountain of Blessing. Because it was here that Moses commanded the children of Israel to erect a monument to the law and an altar for burn offering and peace offering. Under the law man is cursed but under the cross of Christ were He was offered to God as the unique offering, God and man find peace and the very man that was formerly cursed is brought under the blessing of righteous and Holy God.

Deuteronomy (Program #22) – The Rehearsal of the Law (16)

Deuteronomy contains a lengthy section, 13 chapters actually where Moses rehearsed or repeated the law that had came down from Jehovah on Mt Sinai. He was repeating it to a new generation of the children of Israel that had never heard it before.

We come today to the final program dealingwith this rehearsal of the law and how it concluded gloriously with the children of Israel declaring that they would keep these commandments and walk in them and Moses saying to them, “today you had declared Jehovah to be your God that you would walk on His way and keep His statues, His commandments and His judgments and listen to His voice and He will set you high above all the nations which He has made for praise and for a name and for honor and that you will be a holy people to Jehovah your God as He has spoken.”

Warfare is a big topic in the Bible, what is warfare to a christian?  The New Testament talks about it and especially in Ephesians chapter 6 and most Christians are aware that there is such a thing as spiritual warfare.  Of course the Old Testaments records many battles fought by the children of Israel and we know that these typify the spiritual battle that believers are called to today. We probably also realize that our fight is against Satan and his forces of darkness but in any battle it’s crucial to understand not only who you are fighting against but positively what you are fighting for?  As we see Moses preparing Israel as an army as they were about to enter into the good land.

If you drive through virtually any major city these days, it’s hard not to see shop after shop for fortune tellers, crystal ball readers, palm readers and spiritualists. Even the television and radio carry advertisements for people claiming that they can tell our future just by talking to them on the telephone.

Though this industry seems to be flourishing of late, it is not something new. People claiming they have such super natural powers has been around through the ages. Old Testament books like Deuteronomy warned God’s people against engaging such ones. Other books of the history like Samuel even tell the story of Saul, the king of Israel who sought out such counsel.  What motivates people, even God’s people to seek out such prophets?  And more seriously what is behind this activity that caused Jehovah God to react so strongly against it?

Through out the centuries, mankind has struggled to properly and justly govern himself. How grateful we are as a nation to be living in a democracy where we have so much freedom. No doubt this is God’s mercy to us. When so many people on this earth are living under the oppression and tyranny of dictators of unrighteous monarchs.   But as wonderful as the democracy is, in the Bible God’s way for the governing of His people was not a democracy neither was it by dictators or kings. What God desires for His people, Israel and for us His people today within the Church is a theocracy that is government by God’s divine ruling.  This matter is covered in some detail by Moses in the book of Deuteronomy as the children of Israel who were preparing to enter into the good land.

Deuteronomy (Program #12) -The Rehearsal of the Law (5)

Many people take great solace and comfort in the fact that we live in the land that allows us absolute freedom and how and where to worship God. Surely this is a cherish and value freedom that we thank God for. But how much freedom does the Bible give to the people of God in choosing where and how to worship?

In the Old Testament book of Deuteronomy we see that Moses had a lot to say on this issue. Deuteronomy 12:13 says “Be careful that you do not offer up your burnt offerings in every place that you see; But in the place which Jehovah will choose, there you shall offer up your burnt offerings, and there you shall do all that I am commanding you.”  The place that Jehovah will choose is the focus of this chapter in Deuteronomy.  An important and interesting fellowship today and one we all will come to realize which is very, very much in God’s heart.

The matter of God blessing His people is so often spoken of in Christian circles these days. Popular books, detailed the right prayer to pray with the latest method of bringing ourselves into a place where God can bless us.

Surely, God does desire to bless His people, perhaps you pray such a prayer of faith and God had answered you with some material possession. But if the Lord would mercifully open our eyes we would see that even in the Old Testament book like Deuteronomy, the highest blessing for God’s people is just Christ Himself and that we would hold Him fast and live in the sweetness of His presence.

Deuteronomy (Program #10) – The Rehearsal of the Law (3)

To the assembled nation of Israel preparing to cross over the Jordan river and enter Canaan, Moses had this to say, “Hear, O Israel! You are about to cross over the Jordan this day in order to enter in and dispossess nations greater and mightier than you, cities that are big and fortified up to heaven, know therefore today that Jehovah your God is the One crossing over before you as a consuming fire; it is He who will destroy them, and it is He who will subdue them before you, so that you may dispossess them and destroy them quickly, as Jehovah has said to you.”

Surely these words must had filled the people with hope and expectation. but Moses also brought their earlier failures to remembrance, “Remember; do not forget that you made Jehovah your God furious in the wilderness; from the day that you came forth from the land of Egypt up until you came to this place, you have been rebellious against Jehovah.”  Moses once again preparing this new generation to overcome, enter and possess the land.

Deuteronomy (Program #8) – The Rehearsal of the Law (1)

The word Deuteronomy means a second speaking or re-speaking . In Deuteronomy what is been re-spoken by Moses to the assembled nation of Israel was the commandments, the law, the ten commandments, the ordinances, statues and judgments. These were originally given to the people some 38 years prior at Mt Sinai.  The reason for this repeating of the word is that Moses was facing a new generation that had grown up after the law was originally given to their fathers. By now the fathers were all dead. And God’s purpose was with this new, young generation.

The words here of Moses, are the words of a loving, caring father’s speaking to his children. How much all of us as God’s children today needs to hear His word spoken again and again and how much even we ourselves shall speak this word to our own children again and again.

Deuteronomy (Program #2) – The Crucial Points (1)

Deuteronomy, the fifth book of the Bible literally means a second speaking or a re-speaking. For the children of Israel it was Moses re-speaking the law to a new generation as they prepare to enter into the good land. But for us, the entire Bible is a continual re-speaking of God’s word, every time we touch it. And this re-speaking is just Christ.

Stay with us as we come again to see Christ realized and experienced from the Old Testament book of Deuteronomy.
