Acts (Program #69) – The Propagation in Asia Minor and Europe through the Ministry of Paul’s Company (35)

Once again the apostle Paul is given an opportunity to speak during his two year imprisonment at the hands of the corrupt Roman government.  With his wisdom and knowledge of Roman laws and custom, he likely could have talked his way out of this difficult situation.  But he chooses instead not to say all the right things in order to gain his freedom, but rather boldly testifies of the vision of the resurrected Christ that he had seen and who charged him with the marvelous commission of the New Testament ministry.  Stay with us today for a rich and enlightening life study of the Bible.

In Acts chapter 12, James and the other leading brothers in Jerusalem boasted to the apostle Paul’s saying “You observe, brother, how many thousands there are among the Jews who have believed; and all are zealous for the law.”  With tens of thousands believing it seems that truly it was much to boast of in Jerusalem but their boast reveal something else; a dangerous mixture existed in the first New Testament church.  Stay with us, as we explore the effects of this mixture on today’s life study of the Bible.

The Apostle Paul began the second of his great missionary journeys on a contentious note.  A serious dispute aroused between he and Barnabas, his close co-worker and the one who initiated him into the ministry.   The lessons that are seen in this account in Acts chapter 15 hold much help and insight even for us today, if our heart and spirit are open to see and hear God’s speaking from His faithful and holy Word.

As Barnabas and Paul were preaching the gospel and establishing new churches in Asia, men came from Judea, Christians instructing the new believers that to be properly saved they most follow the customs and laws given by Moses.  What effect did this have on God’s move among the Gentiles and how did the Apostles resolve this new crisis?  We will look at this potential devastating development in the first century church on today’s life study of the Bible.

As Christians are we bound to keep the commandments and ordinances of the Old Testament?  This is a difficult question for believers even today but it was more difficult for the saints in the first century.  It imposed the first serious challenge to the oneness of the Body that Christ died to establish.  We will look at this problem of the early church and how God’s sovereignty is displayed in its resolution on today’s life study of the Bible.

The Apostle Paul was the vessel chosen by God to carry the New Testament ministry to the non-Jewish world.  He was also ultimately used to pen more than half of the books in the New Testament; from his personal encounter with the resurrected Christ to his full realization of the meaning of the term “Body of Christ”, his life and ministry stand as a great inspiration and example to believers throughout all ages.  We look at the beginning of his ministry on today’s life study of the Bible.

There are many stages throughout history in God’s move and work among mankind on the earth. Much of the Bible is occupied with these stages.  The great turn of the Lord’s spread during the book of Acts was to the Gentile world, opening a door to eternal life and the Kingdom of the Heavens to all who would take freely the eternal life of God in Christ Jesus. We’re still enjoying this turn today nearly 2000 years later. For this major step in God’s move, the Apostle Paul was raised up sovereignly by the Lord to be the Apostle to the uncircumcision. And, Peter’s ministry was brought to a wonderful and victorious conclusion. We examine both of these stories on today’s life study of the Bible.
